On March 22nd and 24th and on May 5th 2023, field trips on Pianosa Island were held with the students of the Comprehensive Institute of Portoferraio “Giovanni Pascoli” (Secondary School - 3°A, 3°B and Monoennio), of the State Institute of Higher Education "Raffaello Foresi" (High School in Portoferraio – 4°A) and of the State Comprehensive Institute of “Giuseppe Giusti” (Secondary School in Marina di Campo - 2°B, 3°A e 3°B).
During the morning, students visited the water section of the Geological and Archeological Sciences Meuseum, where they were able to learn about the main research activities concerning the water cycle on Pianosa Island, with a focus on local groundwater resources, through poster illustrations and videos. Students were also able to learn in laboratory the techniques of sampling water and measurements of physic-chemical parameters (temperature, pH and electrical conductivity), in addition to measurements of water level and data acquisition using multiparametric probes for continuous monitoring (ex: 1 data/hour).
During the afternoon, the field trip continued in the inner part of the island, where the only active well (PN3) is located and that is used for water supply for inhabitants and visitors of Pianosa. Here, students applied the techniques of sampling and measurements of water (physic-chemical parameters and water level) learned in the museum laboratory during the morning. In addition, students were able to take a closer look at the main components of the new hydrological and groundwater monitoring network, and some indirect investigation methods using DRONE.
In the days following the field trip on Pianosa island, students filled a new specific questionnaire (similar to that provided to them before the lectures) useful to evaluate the learning and knowledge gained about the topics discussed during the whole training program.
