The BRP-CNR represents a support structure for scientific research and/or training and debate activities (e.g. summer school, workshops, etc.) related to the atmospheric, marine, terrestrial and subsoil environments of Pianosa Island. The structure offers the possibility to stay overnight in 11 rooms, (15 bedplaces as a whole); it is also equipped with a kitchen, a living room, (partly used as a work area and partly as a dining area), and a laboratory facility.
With the CNR Provision in April 2019, the DSSTTA entrusted the BRP-CNR to the Institute of Geosciences and Georesources (IGG), also setting up a Working Group (WG) made up of IGG, IBE and ISMAR personnel, the CNR institutes that have mostly worked on the island to date.
These regulations, drawn up by the WG, define the general requirements to access the facility and the methods of submitting and approving access requests. These regulations are supplemented by the BRP-CNR attendance rules, illustrated in a special section of the restricted area of the website “Attendance Rules”, which can be accessed as described below.

Art. 1 - Eligible subjects

The base can host dedicated and support staff for research and / or scientific training activities, as well as staff dedicated to the management and maintenance of the structure. CNR personnel, or other institutions with a formal relationship of collaboration with the CNR (projects, framework agreements, research agreements, etc.), have the priority for the use of the base. According to a specific agreement and / or the formal procedure described in the following articles, extra-CNR groups belonging to research and training institutions that do not have collaboration relationships with the CNR may also be admitted. The WG also reserves the right to evaluate the admissibility of territorial authorities that provide cross-cutting and collective benefit activities on the island, providing a justified formal request.

Art. 2 - Usage costs

A fee may be required for the use of the premises, to cover the management and maintenance costs of the BRP-CNR, including the maintenance of the available instrumentation and laboratories. If not provided as a contribution in specific documents, such as research conventions, framework agreements, project economic plans, etc., these costs will be calculated on the base of an appropriate rate table published on the website www.brp.cnr.it.

Art. 3 - Access request

Those interested in using the base have to submit a formal request to the WG through the appropriate form available on the website www.brp.cnr.it in the "Submit a new project" section. For the description of the activities that have to be carried out and the technical-logistical needs, it will be necessary to take into account the possible support offered by BRP-CNR, as can be deduced from the various information provided at the aforementioned web address. The description must also contain sufficient details for an adequate evaluation by the WG.

Art. 4 - Approval procedure for access requests

The WG evaluates the technical-logistical feasibility of the request in relation to the BRP-CNR and the "island ecosystem" characteristics, taking also into account the consistency with other institutional activities on the island. Subsequently, the WG communicates the preliminary approval or any need for integrations to the contact person of the proposal, including any clearances from the various competent authorities, with particular reference to the Tuscan Archipelago National Park in the case of activities planned in protected areas. The procedures for accessing the "Reserved Area" of the www.brp.cnr.it website will be indicated in the preliminary approval document, where the person in charge of the proposal will be able to indicate the periods of presence at BRP-CNR on the appropriate calendar as well as view the specific attendance rules of the BRP-CNR. A document by the WG will follow with the final approval of the proposal containing the summary framework of the visit periods at the BRP-CNR and the various obligations and spending commitments if due and if not already regulated by a specific agreement. The person in charge / contact person of the group that will be hosted in the BRP-CNR will return this document for acceptance.

Art. 5 - Obligations and responsibilities of the parties

The IGG and the WG are committed to ensuring the full functionality of the infrastructure in support of guests and related work activities. Guests are obliged to respect the indications and recommendations contained in the "Rules of attendance" document. They also assume full responsibility for any conduct that is not congruent with the utmost respect and attention required by frequenting and staying on the Pianosa Island, as a former penal colony and current extension of the Porto Azzurro prison as well as a protected area of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park.
It will be the responsibility of the contact person / manager of the host group to ensure that his/her colleagues are aware of the regulation and the attendance rules of the BRP-CNR, but also of the good behavior rules and respect for the natural heritage of the island and any other institutional activity on the island.
The guest staff must provide for their own insurance coverage and must comply with the disciplinary and safety regulations in compliance with the current legislation for the workers safety.

Art. 6 - Research activities report and products or proceedings of scientific training / debate events

At the end of the visit period with accommodation at the BRP-CNR, the representative of the hosted group will be requested to draw up a short report on the activities carried out, to be sent to the WG.
According to the agreement with the contact person of the host group, the activities carried out will be made public through a brief description in the suitable sections of the website www.brp.cnr.it, both during the execution phase and at the end of the activities themselves.
On journal publications, meeting publications or proceedings of workshops, summer schools, etc., deriving from activities carried out at and / or supported by BRP-CNR, please specify the support received from this infrastructure.
