Exploratory survey of the subsoil of the island of Pianosa

The exploratory survey of the Pianosa island subsoil have started. Researchers from the Institute of Geosciences and Earth Resources of the National Research Council (IGG-CNR) are engaged at the Base Ricerca Pianosa of the National Research Council (BRP-CNR) to support, from a technical-scientific point of view, the first continuous coring stratigraphic survey which is currently being carried out on Pianosa Island. The drilling works, carried out by the MESA srl company of Carrara (MS), commissioned by the Municipality of Campo nell'Elba, began today and will continue at least other five days with the aim of reaching 100 m depth from the countryside plane. Based on the results of the hydrogeological studies conducted by IGG in collaboration with the Tuscan Archipelago National Park and the DST-UniPI, the survey was designed to obtain useful information to enrich the knowledge of the island's subsoil, with particular reference to the hydrostructural structure that regulates the availability of water in the aquifer, as the only resource for water supply on the island. This drilling is an important moment in the history of geological knowledge of the island, since a continuous core has never been carried out before. The cores deriving from the survey will be studied in detail with different analytical tools and the relative results will be interpreted in a geological-hydrogeological key, thanks to a fruitful collaboration between the IGG-CNR and the Departments of Earth Sciences of the University of Siena and of the University of Pisa.
